Once it’s in there, you can remove the default “Home” and “Work” calendar Mac OS X creates if you’re not using them by clicking on them and typing command-Delete (if they’re empty, you won’t be warned before they are removed). Add an account, choose Google, and enter your account information. Otherwise, open iCal, go to Preferences, Accounts. On Lion, you may be offered to automatically set up iCal for your Gmail account when you set up the Mail account if so, great.
